Course image Health Sociology
Maternity Health Nursing

Health Sociology is a field of study that examines the complex interactions between society, health, and illness, focusing on how social structures, cultural norms, and economic conditions shape health experiences and outcomes. This course aims to introduce nursing students to the relationship between society, health, and illness, and to analyse how social, cultural, and economic factors influence the health status of individuals and populations. The course emphasises understanding the patient not only from a biological perspective, but also within their familial, social, and cultural contexts.

The course addresses key topics such as the social determinants of health, health disparities among population groups, the role of culture and beliefs in illness interpretation and health-seeking behaviour, and the impact of poverty, education, and the environment on health outcomes. It also explores health-related behaviours, including treatment adherence, prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices.

This course supports nursing students in developing effective communication skills when working with patients from diverse backgrounds and in understanding the social factors that may hinder or facilitate healthcare delivery. Furthermore, it enhances their ability to provide holistic nursing care that integrates psychological and social dimensions alongside physical aspects.
